As part of my push toward motivation of writing again, I’ve started reading Time To Write, a book that explains how some best selling authors managed to find the time to get started in the business. I’ve always been a person who does pretty much everything when the urge hits. Lately there hasn’t been that much urge to do any of it, except on Twitter. Pretty much everyone suggests that the way to write is to set aside designated scheduled time to write, either every day, every weekend, or some set schedule that works for you. Starting tomorrow I’m going to do this by getting up at 5 AM and trying to work for two hours. We’ll see where this takes us. If you’re struggling right now, this is a good book to help motivate.
Of course, my plans to write have already been met by the real world. My exhaustion over my medical condition (either because of the condition or the worry) got hammered with my daughter having a stomach episode last night that had her throwing up for a couple of hours.
Ever since reading three great books by author John Green (who writes books for teens/young adults), I have toyed with writing something similar based on an incident in my own life. Trying to “write what you know”, I have kicked around approaches for a few days now, writing the story in my head without ever setting something to paper. This is something I always did in high school and college, and it seemed to work for me, even though I always worried I should be physically writing something down.
I’m not sure where this story idea will lead, but taking an incident in my own life and fashioning it into something fictional seems easier than trying to create something from whole cloth right now. I hope to start on it tonight.
After years of making several stabs at it, I’ve decided today is the day I begin to write. I have no idea what I’ll be writing, or even why. I just know that years of mentally pretending I want to be writer (and therefore, fancying myself as one without ever actually doing the work), I actually want to go somewhere with it.
This blog will be my attempt to document my struggle with writing, perhaps capture some of my own writing exercises, and my triumphs along the way.
